And if customers can\u2019t quickly understand what makes you distinct, they assume you\u2019re similar.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1600\">Why most brands get differentiation wrong<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1602\" data-end=\"1864\">Many brands try to stand out by claiming qualities that everyone in the category is expected to have. This usually happens when positioning, messaging, offers, and presentation all follow category norms. Even if your internal process or expertise is different, customers won\u2019t notice unless the difference is visible.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2625\" data-end=\"2936\">I often see businesses that have developed thoughtful methods or unique approaches over time, but externally they describe themselves in exactly the same way as competitors. When people can\u2019t clearly explain why you\u2019re different, they default to comparison.
